Dog Food in Qatar — What's Available and What Works
Choosing the right food for your dog in Qatar involves more than just picking a well-known brand. Breed, age, size, activity level and health all matter — and in Qatar's heat, energy requirements are different from colder climates.
Here's our complete guide based on what we stock, sell and recommend at PetAura in Doha every day.
Top Dog Food Brands in Qatar
1. Royal Canin — Most Comprehensive Range
Royal Canin is the most popular dog food brand in Qatar by a significant margin. The breed-specific range is unmatched — formulas for German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Miniature Schnauzers, Shih Tzus and over 30 other breeds, each with nutrition tailored to that breed's specific health tendencies.
The size range (Mini, Medium, Maxi, Giant) covers everything from Chihuahuas to Great Danes, and the veterinary prescription diets are the most comprehensive available in Doha. If your vet has prescribed a specific diet — joint support, renal, gastrointestinal, skin — Royal Canin is almost certainly what they mean.
Best for: Owners wanting breed-specific or vet-prescribed nutrition.
2. Hill's Science Plan — Best for Sensitive Dogs
Hill's is the brand most often recommended by vets in Qatar for dogs with skin conditions, allergies, digestive sensitivity and weight issues. The Science Plan range is built on decades of clinical research and the ingredient quality is excellent.
Hill's Prescription Diet is particularly valuable for dogs with chronic conditions — kidney disease, liver disease, food allergies and urinary issues all have specific Hill's formulas with strong clinical backing.
Best for: Dogs with health conditions or sensitivities.
3. Purina Pro Plan — Best Performance Option
Pro Plan is made by Purina's premium division and is the food used by many professional working dog handlers and sports dog owners. The protein levels are high, the ingredient quality is strong, and the range includes sport, sensitive, optibalance and veterinary formulas.
It's an excellent option for active dogs, working breeds and dogs that need higher protein without the cost of Acana or Orijen.
Best for: Active dogs, working breeds, owners wanting high performance at mid-range price.
4. Acana — Best Natural Option
Acana uses 50-75% fresh animal ingredients with no artificial preservatives or flavourings. The grain-free formulas are excellent for dogs with grain sensitivities or those that thrive on ancestral, protein-rich diets.
The range is smaller than Royal Canin or Hill's but the quality is consistently excellent. A popular choice among our customers who want a more natural approach to dog nutrition.
Best for: Dogs with grain sensitivities, owners wanting natural high-protein diets.
Choosing by Dog Size
Kibble size and nutritional density need to match your dog's size. Feeding a small dog a large-breed kibble can cause choking and nutritional imbalances. Feeding a large dog a small-breed formula gives the wrong calorie and mineral ratios.
- Small breeds (under 10kg): Mini or Small formulas. Higher calorie density, smaller kibble. Royal Canin Mini, Hill's Small & Miniature, Pro Plan Small & Toy.
- Medium breeds (10-25kg): Medium formulas. Well-rounded nutrition across all brands.
- Large breeds (25-45kg): Maxi or Large formulas. Joint support, controlled growth rate. Very important for large breed puppies.
- Giant breeds (45kg+): Giant formulas — essential. Controlled calorie density and specific joint support minerals. Royal Canin Giant and Hill's Large Breed are the best options available in Qatar.
Puppy Food in Qatar
Puppy nutrition is the most critical feeding decision you'll make. Large and giant breed puppies in particular need controlled calcium and phosphorus levels to prevent skeletal problems that often don't show until the dog is 1-2 years old.
Never feed an adult formula to a puppy. Always use a formula specifically labelled for puppies, and for large breeds, use a large-breed puppy formula. Royal Canin Maxi Puppy and Hill's Science Plan Large Breed Puppy are our top recommendations for large breed puppies in Qatar.
